About The Tournament
The Grissom Math Tournament is a regional math tournament hosted by the Grissom High School Math Team. Cindy Rodgers and Kevin Gray are the sponsors for the Grissom High School Math Team and run the Grissom Math Tournament. The competition is to be held on February 4, 2012 at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.
There will be five levels of competition: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Comprehensive. Each school may enter one team of four members in each level and as many alternates as desired. All individuals will take a written exam, and four different team members per level will compete in a ciphering match. To compete at the Comprehensive level, students may be currently enrolled in any mathematics course. For all other levels, students must be currently enrolled in or have completed the mathematics course at that level and cannot be enrolled in or have completed a higher level mathematics course.
The individual test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions and 3 tie-breakers. The score will be four times the number correct minus the number incorrect. All ciphering competitions will have a time limit of 90 seconds per question. For ciphering, correct answers submitted in the first 30 seconds will receive 5 points, correct answers submitted in the second 30 seconds will receive 3 points, and correct answers in the third 30 seconds will receive 1 point. Each of the 4 ciphering contestants will complete 5 questions. The school score will consist of the top four test scores from each school and the ciphering total.
An interschool competition will be offered as a separate competition this year. The score will not be included in the team score. Trophies will be awarded for this competition. The test will be handed out at the registration table and will be due by 12:00.
Schools may register online here or mail in a registration form before Jan 31, 2012.
